Getting started

Your first chiropractic visit: what to expect

Walking into a chiropractor’s office for the first time can feel like a bit of an unknown. Here’s an honest, plain-language walk-through of what a first appointment usually looks like — so you can arrive relaxed and know what to expect.

Before you arrive

A little preparation makes the whole visit smoother. Wear comfortable, loose clothing you can move in easily — think of the kind of thing you’d wear to stretch or take a walk. Plan to arrive a few minutes early so you have time to fill out your paperwork without feeling rushed.

It also helps to jot down a short history of your concern before you come in: when the pain started, what seems to make it better or worse, and anything you’ve already tried. If your visit is related to a car accident or a work injury, bring any claim or case information you have, along with your insurance details.

The consultation: telling your story

Your first appointment starts with a conversation, not a table. This is where you explain what brought you in — the nagging low-back pain, the headaches, the stiff neck after long days at a desk. Dr. Marrone will ask questions about your health history, your daily routine, past injuries, and your goals, because the same symptom can have very different causes from one person to the next.

There are no wrong answers here, and nothing is too small to mention. The more complete the picture, the better we can understand what’s actually going on and whether chiropractic care is a good fit for you.

A good first visit is mostly listening and looking. Before anyone talks about adjustments, the goal is simply to understand your body, your history, and what you’re hoping to get back to.

The examination

Next comes a hands-on exam. This is how we move from your story to what your body is actually doing. Depending on your concern, the exam may include a few different checks:

Movement and posture

We look at how you stand and move — how far you can bend, turn, and reach — to see where motion is limited or where things feel guarded and tight.

Hands-on assessment

By feeling along the spine and surrounding muscles, we can find the joints that aren’t moving well and the areas that are tender or inflamed. Simple tests help show how the nervous system is carrying pain and whether a nerve is being irritated.

Imaging, when it’s needed

Not everyone needs an X-ray or scan. If the exam suggests it would change how we care for you — or rule something out — we’ll explain why before anything is ordered.

Will I get adjusted on the first visit?

Sometimes, and sometimes not — it depends on what the exam shows. If an adjustment is appropriate and you’re comfortable going ahead, you may have your first one that day. Dr. Marrone uses gentle, low-force technique, so it’s designed to be comfortable even when you’re already sore. You’ll know beforehand what’s going to happen; nothing is done by surprise.

If your body needs a little more calming first, or if something in the exam needs a closer look, we may hold off and start with a gentler plan. Either way, the pace is set by what’s right for you.

A quick checklist for your first visit

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing you can move in
  • Arrive a few minutes early to complete your paperwork
  • Bring your insurance details and any claim or case information
  • Note when your symptoms started and what helps or worsens them
  • List any medications, past injuries, or surgeries
  • Write down the questions you’d most like answered

Your plan and next steps

Before you leave, you’ll get an honest picture of what we found and whether we think we can help. If chiropractic care makes sense, we’ll outline a simple plan — roughly how often you might come in and what to expect along the way. If we think another kind of care would serve you better, we’ll tell you that too, and point you in the right direction.

It’s also normal to feel a little tired or slightly sore for a day after your first adjustment, much like you might after a good workout, as your body adjusts to moving more freely. That usually settles quickly. Gentle movement and staying hydrated tend to help.
